Independent Horizons
Independent Horizons starts with Tom asking a question his loving adoptive parents can't answer: who was his birth family? At 20, he's ready to search for them while studying, finding work, and learning to stand on his own. His story soon expands to include a broad cast and scenes told from other perspectives, including Pauline's.
I can see why players get attached to some of these characters. Their histories give the larger story somewhere to go, and the game puts real effort into its renders, animation, and music. It's interested in relationships and emotional buildup, with choices meant to affect how people connect. Adult material is present, including voyeuristic themes, but the central story takes its time reaching more intimate developments.
Whether that pace feels rewarding depends on how much you enjoy the writing. Some players praise it; others find the narration wordy and the dialogue unnatural. The phone system adds frequent clicks and doesn't always make relationship stats clear, while a few minigames can get in the way of the story. It's an ambitious visual novel with appealing characters, but its early chapters could be much smoother to read and play.
